F-1 2010
Mon Nov 08, 2010 11:07 AM
F-1 2010
  • Highly detailed graphics.
  • Addictive career mode.
  • Very accurate F-1 2010 season data.
    • More an arcade than a simulator.
    • Some disturbing bugs.
    • Absence of split-screen multiplayer.

After some years without a single F-1 game, at last, Codemasters bring the F-1 games to the next-gen consoles once again. Just like the title, this game uses F-1 2010 season data, so that pretty much everything on the game is already up to date.

    Build Your Own F-1 Career

In career mode, you can only choose one of the lower-tier teams at the beginning of your carrer, and if you can rack up your reputation, you can then move to better teams, like McLaren or Ferrari. At the beginning of the game, you can choose how long your career will last.

    Want to become Schumacher here?

As usual, a single race day consists of practice, qualification, and race session. Before each race, player can setup their vehicle according to the track and your own driving style preference. The race goes like a real F-1 race, although with absence of several aspects, like the safety car during an accident.

Outside career mode, there’s also Grand Prix mode, for those who want to create their own F-1 season and race as one of famous F-1 driver. Just like previous Codemasters’ racing games (GRID, DiRT series), F-1 2010 also get all those Codemasters’ traditional features, especially the instant replay, and flashback features make their comeback here. The best feature is dynamic weather, where the weather can randomly changes during a race if you activate it. While in multiplayer, there are four preset game modes, as well as time-trial party mode and custom mode.

Captain Obvious must be behind this…

Unfortunately, this game has many fatal bugs, such as pitstops that makes you ‘stuck’ in the pit lane, AI vehicles that cannot be damaged, etc. At least, Codemasters will release a patch shortly to fix those problems. Plus it’s somewhat difficult to control your F-1 (especially in PC version where keyboard control is too responsive), and takes time to get used to. Also, the HUD (heads up display) lacks of information. There’s no data regarding split time with other racer, target time for qualification session, fuel gauge, etc.

    Presentation

Thanks to the EGO engine, which also used in GRID as well as DiRT 2, the graphics are gorgeous, from the vehicles, the tracks, and even the crowds and the pit crews. The only thing missing is the advanced damage modeling, which is quite disappointing, remembering DiRT 2 and GRID’s damage model were both very realistic. For the sound effect, the engine sound is just like the real F-1 engine, while the crews and teammate’s comments aren’t too annoying.

F-1 2010 is a pretty good start for Codemasters in making a F-1 decent game, albeit its annoying bugs, somewhat arcadey gameplay, this game still capable to satisfy Formula 1 fans alike.
