Light and enjoyable story. Some indirect moral messages in the comic.
- Not for serious readers who expect Plot Twist.
Look at the sky! Is it bird?! No! Plane?! No! That is…Garudaboi!
Once upon a time, in one neighborhood in Bandung area in Indonesia lives a lodging-boy called Saepul. However, he’s not an ordinary boy; Saepul has a super-power just like any usual superhero. His ability is caught by Luna, an innocent cosplayer girl who wish him to be her superhero. Saepul also has other name which is “Garudaboi”, (in English can be called as “Hawkboy”) who will struggle againsts evil, especially from his nemesis, Palananas (Eng. means Pineapple Head).
Morever, we will be introduced to other characters as well, such as Saepul’s lodging house owner, Bajuri who is the ‘stupid’ leader of Garudaboi, Bu Intan (Mrs. Intan) who has world’s best cooking-ability, and Bajigur who is Bajuri’s younger brother also Garudaboi’s partner in action. Then, you will see more superheroes who just like Garudaboi ready to keep Indonesia’s (even world’s) safety.
This comedy – superhero themed comic with its 4-koma style deserved a two thumbs up. Not only its unique drawing-style, but also a ‘fresh’ story-concept in 4-paneled comic which can be found in newspaper or others manga (such as Kobo-chan and Lucky Star).
Furthermore, the plot looks interesting and not too complex. For your information, the comic author, Mr.Galang also known to put “his private life stories’ disguising it as the comic’s story. The serious side in this comic is not too explicit since maybe the comic’s main purpose from the beginning is for comedic entertainment only. Garudaboi has some moral messages that can be found in it (even though not too visible) and for readers who wish to find a plot twist in this comic, Garudaboi might not be the one for you..
Overall, this comic has its own pros and cons but still overall this comic still deserved thumbs up. This book is very enjoyable to be read on your leisure time. Garudaboi has been released in 2 volumes and available in any Indonesian big bookstores.
