Blur
  • Very addictive, especially in multiplayer mode.
  • "Mario kart" with real-life cars & locations!.
  • Custom soundtrack support (console version).
  • 4-player Split screen!.
    • No custom control configuration (PC version).
    • Only career mode for singleplayer game.
    • No vehicle modifications.

Bizarre has successfully made another new formula their latest racing game:  A Race game with about 20 licensed cars in a real-world track…with power-up scattered along the track just like in Mario Kart! Note that the Mario Kart element brought into this game is the power-up system only. So forget about Mario Kart and all its clones games while we’re talking about this game…

Arcade Racer + Power Up = Good Idea.

The damage effects looks cool, too

This game doesn’t have any storyline nor any other singleplayer mode other than career mode. In career mode, your aim is to win every race to face the rivals head-to-head, and win their cars as well as their ‘mods’. Every action performed, such as drifting, hitting opponents using a power-up, and winning a race, you’ll get ‘fan-points’ (a sort of Project Gotham Racing’s ‘kudos’ system) which allows you to unlock more vehicles.

There are eight power-ups in total, and most can be fired either forward or backwards. They are: Shunt (fires a sort of fireball which homes in opponent in front of you), Bolt (3 standard projectiles), Shield, Nitro, Shock (creates electric pillars in front of you/opponent), Mine, Barge (shockwave), and Repair.

Mario Kart fans will obviously recognize some of those power-ups. However, unlike Mario Kart, each car has its own health bar, which will get you ‘wrecked’ if it’s empty. Not only power-ups, each hard-enough crashes could reduce your health-bar, although not too much. Players also can install a ‘mod’ which obtained by beating the rivals (or buying them in multiplayer) to make your power-ups more powerful, for example, having four Bolt ammos each pick-ups, and many more.

    Cars and Tracks

Even such a run-down car still outrun you.

All the vehicles in the game are licensed, real-life cars, like Nissan 350Z, Land Rover, Dodge Viper, BMW M3, Hummer H2, Toyota Supra, and many more. All vehicles are divided into four classes, according from their performance, from D (lowest) class to the A (highest) class. Each car has different durability and handling, depends on it’s size, i.e trucks, like Land Rover or Hummer has better durability compared the others, although they’re obviously slower. Unfortunately, there’s no vehicle customization feature in this game (except car colour).

The tracks takes place in big cities around the world, such as Shibuya, Barcelona, Los Angeles, and others.

The Presentation is above standard But…

This game’s graphic still somewhat lacking compared to Split/Second, and the game does look a bit darker. ‘Licensed Soundtracks’ are mostly techno music, so you can go dancing while racing (not recommended though) and the console version allows you to play your own music. And, you can take a photo using in-pause menu photo mode to capture the moments during the race.

    Say…Cheese!

Unfortunately, the PC version can be said a bit flawed. There’s only two control configuration without any features to customize the controls (Play racing game using WASD??? You got to be kidding.), no custom soundtrack support, and the worst-case is, ‘Hitching’/FPS drop while racing, even in high-end PC! (although it can be fixed by installing the latest VGA card driver)

While it’s not as intense as Split/Second, Blur has a better gameplay, and more challenging difficulty and of course, tons of licensed cars which as cool as the cars on Split/Second game.
