Splash Damage who was known as the creator behind Enemy Territory: Quake Wars is now come out with their new game called “Brink”, an objective-oriented team-based FPS. Brink makes a radical approach compared to any ordinary FPS; by making single player and multiplayer gameplay to be played seamlessly, which means that other players can even join in ongoing offline matches.
Battle in a Floating City
Brink takes place in a floating city called the Ark, where two factions fighting each other for supremacy; These 2 factions are the superpower Security faction and the somewhat lo-tech Resistance faction. Looks cliche, huh? Not really, at least both factions have their own unique campaign and storyline.
When Single Player and Multi Player Collides...
As previously mentioned, there’s no boundary between single player and multiplayer in this game. If this game played offline (single player), then player will fight with computer controlled bots, but if another player joins the game, one of the bot will be replaced by the player in case if maximum player limit reached (maximum players per match are 16).
Player can create their own characters by using a complex character creation method. There are three different character body size, each with their own advantages and disadvantages. These 3 body sizes selection are agile, medium, heavy (as usual, agile characters can move faster but more fragile and unable to carry bigger guns, while heavy can withstand more punishment and carry bigger guns), plus four typical-multiplayer FPS classes such as soldier, engineer, medic, and operative (i.e: spy, in other game) with their own special unique set of skills.
As more experience points obtained, more weapons, special abilities and accessories will be unlocked for your character to use. Your weapons also can be modified according your combat style, i.e by adding sniper scope, grenade launcher, silencer, and more.
Be SMART!
Another unique gameplay system is SMART (Smooth Movement Across Random Terrain), which looks like Mirror’s Edge (Parkour) movement system, where player movement can be done simply by pointing the camera to the destination. And unlike other FPS games, in Brink, players are encouraged to do teamwork, as it’s actually very rewarding, either as an achievement or experience points.
With such features, plus Splash Damage’s experience in making a good team-based multiplayer FPS, it’ll be possible that Brink could make a breakthrough in FPS genre, in which most of them are ‘meh’ lately.
