Nowadays most video games industry still have a huge bias towards male playable characters; (with 90% from all video games released in America and Europe having male playable characters), however in today’s seventh generation console (year 2005-2010) almost 51%, today’s games generation have a female playable characters as the main character.
Still some developers like Activision are still doubtful that female leads will be popular and raise the sales. Even when core (Action, Shooter, RPG, etc.) and casual genres are separated, the percentage of core games with playable female characters remain at a respectable level, while the male/female ratio in casual games reaches parity.
Again, The primary argument on the subject is the impact of playable character gender on the quality and sales of core-targeted games.
As seen in the graphic, the games with male only / female only and either gender as playable character does not have a huge significant average score difference. Strangely, games with undetermined main characters’ gender (i.e Spore) have even lower average score. This most likely happened due to the character design, as these games tend to have robots or other non-gendered creatures.
However, it has been proven that in the last five years, the main characters’ gender difference does not have much impact on the games’ rating and sales.
